Final Coin Tally

Here it is; the final coin tally. In the four months that I've been blogging about our coin finds, my wife and I have racked up a total of $49.80 in change found on the ground. Not bad for four months. I broke down what we found by denomination type. Here it is:

145 pennies
6 nickels
27 dimes
8 quarters
1 dollar
2 $20 bills
+ $ 2.35 in unspecified coins

Over Twenty Dollars Found in One Day

This was a huge payday. Walking around Philly, money seemed to be everywhere. My wife stumbled across a rather large pile of pennies at a bus stop in the old city. We found 35 pennies at once at the bus stop. (see picture) Throughout the day we found some more change. However, after dinner, we found the biggest find yet; a $20 bill! Amazing! The penny blog counter just grew by leaps and bounds!

For those interested in a summation of the money that we found thus far, I’ve added a “Change Found Total” feature to the blog. Each time that I report what we found, I will add the new total to this feature. While the total is not very large, keep in mind that it’s free money and we’ve only been counting for less than two months.

02/09 and after: still looking for the piece of paper with my records…

Friday, February 13, 2009

First things first. Blogs are not easy to keep up with. I was never a diary keeper, and I guess that I never will be. So, with that said, I have some catching up to do.

January 31st was quite a successful day. My wife and I did some shopping in Ross and found a stunning $1 and 16 cents. Not that that’s a large sum of money. But when you’re use to finding only a few pennies and maybe a dime, anything close to a dollar is exciting. I didn’t keep accurate records, but the bulk of our money was found in one of those machines that converts change into bills. I guess that someone forgot to check the dispenser near the bottom of the machine. It dumps out things that it thinks are not coins, but most of the time what ends up in the bottom dispenser is actually money. So, when we walked by and saw it, I think that I said out loud, “Oh man!” I quickly grabbed the change. A lady was walking by, and I really believe that she thought that I was a bum, because I had gotten so excited about the money.

01/31/09: $1.16, Ross area

Monday, February 2, 2009

Last week I found only 6 cents. Not much, but every little bit counts!

01/29: 1 nickel, Schenley Plaza; 1 penny, Hillman Library.

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Not much to report from the weekend. We found some change, but not much.

01/24: 1 penny, Aldi Foods; 2 dimes and 1 penny, Robinson Mall

Friday, January 23, 2009

A temporary thaw is taking place as I write. In the hopes of finding some change emerging from the layers of melting snow, I walked around Hillman and CLP during my lunch break. I found two pennies and one nickel, each still partially buried in dirty, wet snow. All three coins were found in front of three separate parking ticket dispensers.

Change found since last post:

01/22: 2 pennies, Whole Foods parking lot; 1 dime, inside Whole Foods

01/23: 1 penny, near parking ticket dispenser in front of CLP; 1 penny, near parking ticket dispenser in front of Frick Fine Arts Building, 1 nickel in front of parking ticket dispenser at Schenley Plaza

Monday, January 19, 2009

The piggy bank didn’t get much fatter over the weekend. I’m starting to think that because of the Market Place story, more people are picking up change. Well, I’m sure that’s not why, but it sounds like a good explanation as to why we only found 4 pennies this weekend.

Change found over the weekend:
01/17: 3 pennies, Trader Joe’s
1 penny, Giant Eagle

Friday, January 16, 2009

We started to save our found change on January 5th. However, with all the recent snow, finding change on the sidewalk has been difficult. I suspect that once the snow melts, many pennies, nickels and dimes will come out of their winter hibernation and into our piggy bank.

Tally thus far:
01/05: 1 penny found in front of Hillman Library
01/07: 1 penny, 5th and Craig (also, a 42 cent stamp found on Kentucky Ave.)
01/08: 2 dimes, Whole Foods
1 penny, Bellefield and 5th
01/11: 1 penny and 1 dime, Target
3 pennies, Trader Joe's
01/13: 1 penny, Hillman Library
